Business Processes Management

Research in the Business Process Management field addresses topics to identify, analyze and facilitate the introduction or the improvement of appropriate business processes in the corporate environment to support the company in its effort to efficiently operate the globalised business environment and to coordinate the relevant funding activities.

Current efforts and activities focus on these main technology areas and processes:

  • Technical support and management of Virtual Enterprise (VE) and Network Organizations (NO)
  • Interoperability of enterprise applications and software, as part of the horizontal infrastructure to support the formation of VEs and the efficient operation of large enterprises
  • Product Portfolio management and Business Intelligence
  • Solution Portfolio Management and Business Intelligence
  • Product Life Cycle Management
  • Environmental management, and more specifically eco design and end of life management of electronic products
Current projects:
016542 "PRIME - Providing Real Integration in Multi-disciplinary Environments"

The main objective of the PRIME project is to give business professionals a learning environment where they can experiment with new ideas and learn how to handle the entire life cycle of products and processes for all stakeholders of the organization. PRIME proposes to achieve this by enhancing current work environments with a new paradigm based on serious gaming. This will provide the means for learning by experience within a virtual environment that is safe and foments risk taking without detrimental impact on the business. The experience garnered is based on strategic management, including multi-stakeholder negotiation and business connectivity.

507849 "ATHENA - Advanced Technologies for Interoperability of Heterogeneous Enterprise Networks and their Applications"

The objective of the ATHENA Integrated Project is to be the most comprehensive and systematic European initiative in the field of enterprise application interoperability, removing barriers to the exchange of information in and among organizations. Building on its vision statement that "By 2010, enterprises will be able to seamlessly interoperate with others", ATHENA aims to enable interoperability by providing a comprehensive Interoperability Framework.

507100 "PROMISE - Product Lifecycle Management and Information Tracking using Smart Embedded Systems"

PROMISE is an integrated project that aims to develop a new generation Product Information Tracking and Flow Management system. This system will allow all actors that play a role during the lifecycle of a product-managers, designers, service and maintenance operators, recyclers-to track, manage and control product information at any phase of its lifecycle-design, manufacturing, MOL, EOL-at any time and any place in the world. PROMISE also has its IMS dimension, bringing together a large international partnership involving five IMS regions: the EU, Switzerland, Japan, Australia and the U.S.

04/ENV/GR/000138 "IPP-TEL - Integrated Product Policy in the Telecommunication Sector"

The project refers to Eco-design and End of Life Management of a telecom device. The main objectives of the project are:

  1. Eco-Design of a Selected Telecom device aimed at developing an electronic product with minimised environmental impacts during the whole life cycle.
  2. End of life management of a selected Telecom device aimed at demonstrating an eco-efficient way to close the material and component loop.
  3. The utilisation of the experience gained for the development of a methodological framework for the Eco-design and End of Life Management of other electronic products.

The focus of the project was on the research domains of Architecture and platform, Enterprise Modelling and Ontologies.

IST-1999-60002 "GLOBEMEN - Global Engineering and Manufacturing in Enterprise Networks"

The objective of GLOBEMEN was to develop a reference architecture for the integration of the processes of a Virtual Manufacturing Enterprise. Three main processes studied were Sales and Marketing, Inter-enterprise Project Management, and Collaborative Product Design.

G1RD-CT2000-00284 "MAIN-E - Networked Negotiation Platform for Manufacturing and Logistics Integrated Planning and Control in SME Multi-Enterprise Environment"

The objective of MAIN-E was to provide electronic support to Supply Management through the development of an Internet-based inter-enterprise platform. Emphasis was placed on SMEs. Within the framework of the project, a socio-economic study was performed to measure the impact of the platform on European enterprises.
